I am an experienced psychotherapist practicing in Syracuse, NY, with a comfortable home office in the Syracuse University area. I specialize in food and body issues, mindfulness, and positive aging. I am also a professional blogger and podcaster, with a focus on healthy aging and longevity.

Helping You Create a Positive Relationship with Food and Your Body

I am an advocate of intuitive, or mindful, eating. The main goal of intuitive eating is to become the expert on your own body, rather than relying on diets or so-called “experts”. This philosophy views eating as a way to nourish and satisfy your body and mind. Satisfaction and pleasure are encouraged, and food is no longer the enemy or something to be avoided. Through intuitive eating, you learn to rely on and trust your body’s internal cues for a peaceful and balanced approach to eating. Over time, you’ll notice that you no longer swing from restricting food to overeating, and instead are establishing normal eating habits. People have described this approach as “freeing”, “liberating”, and “life changing.” This practice does require patience and practice, but helps you create a wholly different relationship with food which is positive, natural and sustainable.

I also support the philosophy of the movement Health At Every Size (HAES), which is a scientifically proven approach that supports a holistic view of health and weight. Its main objectives are “feeling good about oneself, eating well in a natural, relaxed way, and being comfortably active.” HAES respects body diversity, meaning that healthy people naturally have different shapes and sizes. HAES also recognizes that health and happiness do not depend on weight, shape or size, but rather on a social, emotional, physical and spiritual well being.

I’m a Social Worker

As clinical social worker, I see people as individuals, but individuals that are affected by the environment in which they live. This is particularly relevant for women who have clear culturally defined roles they are expected to follow. Many of my clients struggle with the constrictions of our culture’s expectations of them as women, partners and mothers.

I keep current on the research related to the biological factors which contribute to our moods and behavior. I will often recommend practices which integrate brain and body because they are most effective. I am a fan of yoga, walking, EFT (tapping), and NIA. I also may recommend abdominal breathing and meditation for stress reduction.

Walking the Walk

I try my best to follow my own recommendations on leading a balanced life, and managing my own stress. To this end, I pay attention to eating whole foods, exercise and pleasure. I am an avid tennis player, knitter, dog lover and nature lover. I feel very fortunate to have a job which brings me deep meaning and satisfaction.
